New Scanology TrackScan Sharp-Z: Large-Scale 3D Scanning

Measuring large components can present several challenges, particularly when maintaining tracking coverage across complex shapes or working around large structures. Repositioning equipment and managing cables can add time to the inspection process.
The new Scanology TrackScan Sharp-Z has been developed to address these challenges, combining fully wireless operation, automatic self-tracking and an extended measurement range to make large-scale 3D scanning more flexible and efficient.
Fully Self-Tracking 3D Scanning
One of the TrackScan Sharp-Z's standout features is Scanology's Fully Self Tracking (FST) technology, which uses a dynamic rotary platform to automatically rotate the tracker as the scanner moves.
With 360° tracker rotation, the system maintains the tracking field of view as the operator moves around a component. This helps reduce interruptions caused by repositioning the tracker, particularly when measuring large or complex workpieces.
The system also offers tracking distances of up to 12 metres and a single-station measurement volume of 600 m³, providing wide-area coverage for large-scale 3D measurement applications.
High-Speed Scanning and Detailed Measurement
The TrackScan Sharp-Z uses quad-cross blue laser technology, with a total of 162 laser lines across its scanning modes, to capture detailed 3D measurement data.
With a measurement rate of up to 10 million measurements per second and accuracy of up to 0.025 mm, the system combines fast data capture with high-precision measurement.
Four scanning modes provide flexibility for different measurement requirements, including rapid surface scanning, fine detail capture and measuring recessed or difficult-to-access features.
Its 50-megapixel industrial cameras also support long-range tracking, helping the system maintain reliable scanner positioning across larger measurement areas.
Fully Wireless Operation for Greater Flexibility
The TrackScan Sharp-Z is designed for fully wireless operation, removing the restrictions of cables when carrying out 3D scanning and inspection.
Both the scanner and tracker feature dual battery compartments with hot-swappable batteries, allowing batteries to be replaced without interrupting measurement.
Combined with automatic tracking, this provides greater freedom of movement when inspecting large components and working across different industrial environments.
Large-Scale 3D Measurement and Inspection
With its extended tracking range, automatic self-tracking and high-speed scanning capabilities, the TrackScan Sharp-Z is designed for applications involving large components and structures.
The technology is particularly relevant to industries such as aerospace, automotive manufacturing, energy and heavy engineering, where accurate dimensional inspection and measurement of large workpieces are important.
By reducing the need for tracker repositioning and offering greater measurement coverage, the system can help make large-scale 3D scanning and inspection more efficient.
The Scanology TrackScan Sharp-Z is available through Manchester Metrology.
